Understanding Erosive Lichen Planus: Diagnosis and Treatment Perspectives

Erosive lichen planus can be a perplexing condition, both for patients and healthcare providers. One patient who came in today had experienced months of frustration, having sought help from numerous medical professionals without success. Despite her persistent oral discomfort, she had been unable to receive a proper diagnosis or effective treatment.

Upon examination, it became apparent that she was experiencing a range of symptoms characteristic of erosive lichen planus. These included painful ulcers and erosions on the oral mucosa, accompanied by white, lace-like patches known as Wickham's striae.

Additionally, she described difficulty eating and speaking due to the discomfort caused by these lesions. As we explored her medical background further and conducted a thorough examination, it became increasingly clear that erosive lichen planus was responsible for her troubling symptoms.

It was a clinical suspicion in addition to a formal biopsy which led to a confirmed diagnosis. I then created a treatment plan designed to alleviate her symptoms and prevent further progression of the condition. Through the application of topical corticosteroids, Orasyl Green Chlorhexidine mouthwash and meticulous oral hygiene practices, I was able to offer the patient much-needed relief from her discomfort.

This patient's experience highlights the significance of consulting dentists with special interests in oral medicine issues. Moving forward, I am committed to providing excellent care for patients with erosive lichen planus and other complex oral health conditions. By utilising my expertise and staying updated on advancements in dental care, I aim to empower patients to take control of their oral health and overall well-being.

In summary, erosive lichen planus may present challenges in diagnosis and management, seeking care from dental professionals with a keen interest and experience in Oral Medicine can make it easier for patients to reach a conclusive diagnosis.
