Dr Samintharaj Kumar
Chronic Pain
I will do a comprehensive evaluation and consultation prior to developing a treatment plan that will suit your needs. A detailed past dental and medical history will need to be assessed. Co-existing mental health conditions relating to panic and anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder should be explored. Coordination with other involved healthcare providers, such as pain management doctors, neurologists, and surgeons, may be required. All of this information will form the basis for appropriate dental and anaesthetic treatment planning.
My multimodal treatment will include a pain management strategy for pre-emptive analgesia, intra-operative comfort, physical therapy, and postoperative pain relief. The aim is to cover as many pathways of discomfort for you during the peri-operative period as is reasonable and indicated for specific patients and procedures. Possibilities include alpha agonists, NMDA receptor antagonists, antihistamines, opiates, acetaminophen, NSAIDs, benzodiazepines, steroids, anti-emetics, local anaesthetics, and sedative hypnotics. Common routes of administration may be topical, oral, intravenous, or intramuscular. By using some of these medications, I can provide a patient experience that minimises pain, swelling, nausea, and anxiety.
Many patients with chronic pain face constant suffering and are typically unwilling to seek professional care for their dental conditions because of fear of additional pain. However this is truly where I can help.
